Cement & Aggregates

Aggregates are essential in groundwork and construction. They are collections of small particles or fragments of rock, minerals or manmade mixtures. They account for up to 80% of the volume of concrete and 85% of its mass when added to the contents of a cement bag. You will find quite a wide range of types in common use, including gravel, sand, ballast, topsoil and slag, as well as recycled concrete.

Aggregates play a major part in ensuring the strength and stability of concrete, as well as helping its elastic and thermal properties. They also minimise shrinkage and can prevent the finished product from cracking. They transform what's in a modest cement bag into the perfect construction concrete.

At Mill Timber Direct we stock a comprehensive range of aggregates suitable to be used in the mixing of cement for all applications. Our aggregates are easily transportable: a building sand bulk bag will fit easily alongside a cement paper bag in the boot of a family car. For trade customers, the quantities in a building sand bulk bag are just the same so as to keep them easy to handle, but naturally the number of bags needed will be much greater.

We are very happy for you to visit and collect your order from us at our premises in Crumlin. If you need just one cement bag or a few, plus a small amount of aggregate you will have no problem in taking them away in person. However, we can also deliver right across South Wales and to the Bristol area.

Don't overlook this vital component which will ensure a strong, professional quality to any project you are embarking on. And please just ask us for expert advice on how to choose and use cement aggregates.

Cement & Aggregates FAQs

What are Cement & Aggregates?

Aggregates are naturally occurring granular materials such as sand, gravel and crushed stone. They are available in a range of sizes known as fine, coarse, cobbles and boulders. Cement is a chemical substance that is used to bind aggregates and water together to make concrete. It adheres the mix and sets firm to stabilise built structures.

What is the Mix of Cement & Aggregates?

A standard concrete mix is usually one part cement to two parts of sand and four parts of aggregates. This can be modified to suit the particular strength that is required, the colour and the consistency. Many people laying foundations create a mix that is one part cement, six parts aggregates and three parts sand.
