Roof Batten

At Mill Timber Direct, we stock a wide range of roofing supplies and materials. When you are constructing a roof, one of the integral parts of the structure is the roof battens. These are the lengths of wood which are laid horizontally between the rafters of your roof and will be used to attach either the roofing felt or the slates or tiles. Battens can also be referred to as roofing lathes and the distance apart at which they are fitted will depend on which roofing material you have chosen.

It is very important to choose good quality timber for your roof battens as they will be part of your roof for many years to come. At Mill Timber Direct, we currently stock two different types of roofing batten. The blue-treated batten is FSC-certified timber which has been rough-sawn and treated to prevent any incidents of fungal mould, rot or insect infestation. This is very important for the longevity of your roof battens as they are difficult to replace once in situ.

We also stock Type A green treated battens, which, again, are FSC-certified timber and treated to prevent fungal issues, insect problems or rot. The green Type A battens have also been pressure treated (tanalised) with a mixture of chemicals to help protect the timber from poor weather conditions such as rain, snow and freezing temperatures. Our roofing battens also come in a wide variety of sizes to suit every roofing project.

After you have selected your roofing battens, our expected delivery time is usually 3-5 working days (subject to confirmation). We can also supply everything else you need for your roofing project, including all fittings, roofing felt and rubber coverings. We can also offer free delivery to selected locations if your order is over £480.

Roof Battens FAQs

Why are Roof Battens Good?

Roof battens are used because they create a stable base for roof coverings. Roof battens also take the load of snow and help against other elements, such as strong winds. They allow for ventilation, which helps to reduce the risk of moisture damage. Using good quality battens is important to create a secure roofing structure.

How Do You Fit Roof Battens?

To install roof battens, they must be placed and secured horizontally across the rafters or trusses of a roof. The type of roof covering determines the size and gauge of the batten, as they provide a base for attaching the roofing material and creating a stable structure. The nails used should penetrate a minimum of 40mm into the rafter.
