Wooden Gravel Boards

Wooden gravel boards are essential components in fencing systems, providing structural support and durability to fence panels. Sometimes called kick plates, these boards are typically timber planks which are pressure-treated for longevity and resilience against outdoor elements. Their primary function is to act as a barrier between the ground and the fence itself, preventing direct contact with soil, moisture and potential rot.

One of the key purposes of wooden gravel boards is to prolong the lifespan of fence panels and featheredge boards by preventing them from coming into direct contact with the ground. By elevating the panels or featheredge boards slightly, gravel boards help mitigate issues such as moisture absorption, fungal decay and insect infestation, which are common problems associated with ground-level fencing. This preventive measure significantly extends the overall durability of the fence, reducing the frequency of maintenance and replacement.

Wooden gravel boards also serve aesthetic and practical purposes in fencing installations. They create a neat and uniform base for featheredge boards, ensuring a visually pleasing appearance while providing a stable foundation. Additionally, they help to keep the bottom of the featheredge slats level and secure, preventing them from sagging or warping over time. Wooden gravel boards are also particularly advantageous in locations with high moisture levels or variable ground conditions, where traditional ground-level fencing may deteriorate rapidly.

These boards are commonly used in various fencing applications, including residential, commercial, and agricultural settings. In residential properties, wooden gravel boards are frequently used in garden fencing projects to enhance privacy, security and boundary demarcation. In commercial and industrial environments, they are utilised for perimeter fencing around facilities, parking areas and storage yards to enhance security and delineate property lines.

Gravel Boards FAQs

What is a Gravel Board?

A gravel board is installed at the base of a fence to help prevent groundwater ingress and damage to the fence boards. It also gives a nice, neat finish to the bottom of a featheredge fence. A gravel board can be made from timber or concrete.

How Do You Fit a Gravel Board?

Fitting a timber gravel board to your fence is a relatively straightforward process. Measure and cut the board to size (if needed) and position it at the base of the fence. Attach it in place with screws or nails to the fence posts and check it is secure.
